Many of my templates have their main navigation menus in the sidebar or another vertical space. At the time of this post, these templates use vertical navigation:
Little Bit of Sunshine
Mint Chocolate Chip
ProPhoto's normal drop-down menus are not available in vertical menus. This means that if you nest menus, all options show on the screen at all times, which can be a bit cumbersome if you have multiple galleries. ProPhoto's grid feature is a great workaround for this problem. I recommend that those who use templates with vertical navigation use ProPhoto's grid feature to create a galleries "gateway" page to replace the basic horizontal drop-down. You can take a look at an example of this in action here:
Your first step is to create your gallery pages, making sure that the first image in each gallery is the one you want to represent your gallery on the gateway page. ProPhoto has a great tutorial on creating slideshow galleries, so I won't repeat the same information here. You can find the tutorial here:
Once you've created pages (not posts) for each of your galleries and inserted your slideshows into them, you're ready to create your gallery grid page. It's a simple process. Just use Pages --> Add New to create one more page. This time just call it "Galleries" or "Portfolio" -- whatever you'd like to name your gateway page.
Next, click the "ProPhoto" button to create a new grid:
In the resulting pop-up, make your grid selections. Your grid type should be "Select Posts/Pages" -- you can choose the other settings to match your needs. There are no right answers. If you have 4 galleries, you can choose a 4 column grid and keep everything on one line or a 2 column grid for larger images. You can choose the crop ratio of your images (1:1 for square, etc) and decide whether you'd like the name of the gallery to be visible on the page or shown on rollover. There are no right answers here -- just go with your preferences, you can change this later.
Under "Show" you'll choose "Pages" then drag the gallery pages you created from the left side to the right. Order them however you'd like. Then click "Insert grid" to create your grid.
The resulting page will show a grid placeholder to let you know that your grid was created successfully.
Just click "Publish" to create the page. Now that it's created, you can go to ProPhoto 4 --> Customize --> Menus --> Vertical nav. menu 1 (or wherever you need to add the link) and hook up this page to the "Galleries" link. If you need to add more galleries or change the options later, you can simply open the galleries page and click "edit" on your grid placeholder. Once you've made your changes, just remember to update the page so the changes will be reflected on the site.
